Chang DeJuan has spina bifida and also hydrocephalus. Thanks to the generous gifts of many people we were able to provide her with the surgery she needed. She is now returned to her orphanage in preparation for additional surgery in Beijing under the Chinese Tomorrow Fund.

Update: October 2008

JuanJuan returned to the Center from her surgery on August 21. She continues to have excess fluid around her brain, but her doctor says that it is not a significant amount at this time. He does not want to subject her to another surgery right now. For now, the nannies will continue to monitor her condition, and keep her as healthy as possible. She is eating and growing well.

Date of Update: August 5, 2008

DeJuan is progressing with her recovery very well. She is very alert and responsive to those around her. When Hannah went to check on her, she found DeJuan being held by Nanny Fei. Nanny Fei reported that DeJuan had played for about an hour that morning, and had been awake and active for about 30 minutes prior to Hannah's visit. The temporary shunt was taken out yesterday, and so far there has been no change in the pressure on her brain. There is no drainage from the incision on her back either. She is back on her normal feeding schedule of every 3 to 4 hours. DeJuan was fed while Hannah was there, and Hannah says that she took her bottle with great enthusiasm! Nanny Fei says that DeJuan is becoming more and more active and will stretch her arms and kick her little legs. Later that day, the doctor came to check on her...DeJuan was not happy about that. But she only fussed for a few minutes. We are so relieved to hear she is doing so well. None of this would have been possible without the many caring friends who helped make her surgery possible. Thanks to all of you, little "JuanJuan" has a chance to find her place in this world!

Thank you all so much for your help with my surgery!
